Data residency and in-region AI: what UAE enterprises need to get right
Residency is about control, not just location
Keeping data in-region only helps if the processing and the keys are governed there too. If your data sits locally but is sent to a foreign model for every decision, the sensitive part still leaves your control.
Evaluate the whole path: storage, processing, and where the decision is actually made.
Why it matters for regulated work
Financial, property, healthcare, and public-sector data carry obligations about where they may be processed and who may see them. In-region AI keeps you inside those obligations by design rather than by exception.
Questions to ask a vendor
Where is data stored, where does inference run, who holds the keys, and what happens during an outage. Vague answers to any of these are the answer.
Mapping your real data path
The single most useful exercise is to draw the actual path a piece of regulated data takes when a decision is made: where it is stored, where it is processed, which model sees it, and who holds the keys. Most residency surprises come from a step in that path that no one had mapped.
Once the path is visible, gaps are obvious and fixable. Residency stops being a claim on a slide and becomes a property you can point to at every step.
