An AI governance checklist for UAE boards
Ownership and control
Ask who controls the model weights, the data, and the decision logic. Rented intelligence means a foreign policy or price change can disrupt your operations. Boards should treat that as a concentration risk, the same way they treat a single-supplier dependency anywhere else.
Auditability
Ask whether every material decision leaves a record you can replay and verify independently. 'The model was confident' is not auditable. A checkable record is. This is the difference between a system you can defend and one you merely hope holds up.
Continuity and residency
Ask where data lives, whether it stays in-region, and whether the system can operate offline or during an outage. Continuity is a governance question, not just an IT one.
Turning the checklist into a habit
A checklist used once at procurement is a formality; used repeatedly, it becomes governance. The strongest boards revisit the same few questions (ownership, auditability, continuity, honest scope) whenever an AI system moves closer to a consequential decision, not just when the contract is signed.
Documenting the answers over time also creates its own record: a clear trail of what the board asked, what management showed, and where the gaps were. That trail is itself a governance asset if a decision is ever questioned.
